Character Information
Name: Hero (?)
Series: The Property of Hate
Appearance: Small point of note: despite looking like a normal human, she has only three fingers and a thumb on each hand, like a cartoon character. The digits have shifted around so that it looks like this is natural. It's not.
Age: She's definitely a kid. Probably something like 8?
Canon Point: Towards the end of Ex Position
Canon History: HA HA HA FINE

One night, Hero wakes up to find a strange man with a TV for a head perched on her dresser. He asks if she wants to be a hero; she accepts, tells her sleeping mother she loves her, and follows him onto the roof, up a stairway of clouds and out of her world.

This was a real bad plan, but she's like eight.

The shine of the adventure begins to tarnish pretty quickly. The TV guy introduces himself as RGB, and when asked if he's a monster, replies that he's the very worst one. Though affable, he's also rather brusque with Hero, and quick to snatch his hand away when she tries to hold it. They walk in silence after this for a ways before settling down for the night.

In the morning, Hero wakes up first, and encounters a strange talking butterfly. The creature asks if she trusts RGB and - without letting her answer - tells her that she would be wise not to do so. It also asks why she agreed to come with RGB, to which she replies that it was because he needed a hero. The butterfly tells her to remain wise before fluttering off.

Hero keeps the encounter to herself, and explores a little on her own before RGB wakes up, finding some of the local wildlife: Lies and Doubts. RGB explains a little about them, before they're set upon by other creatures, Fears. RGB tells her to run and tries to fight them off, but is overpowered and calls to Hero for help - she is a hero, after all. Hero hesitates, but sees RGB get stabbed by a Fear and returns to try to fight it off. Lacking the knowledge of how, though, she's run through the chest as well. She breaks a vial from RGB's coat when she falls, and the substance inside kills the Fears, but Hero's down for the count.

When she wakes again, she finds that RGB has carried her to the home of his friend Madras, who helped heal her with a dream. She impresses Madras by being a baseline level of grateful and friendly, but is quickly dragged off again by RGB to go catch a ferry. On the way, he tells her that the only reason she survived being stabbed was because she hadn't been afraid.

At the dock, they find that an unexplained "she" has sunk the ferry. While RGB has a plot-relevant conversation, Hero investigates the environment and solves the problem by figuring out how to make a gravity-defying bridge. They walk for a while, RGB explains that the world around them is made out of something like thought, and they briefly meet RGB's weird cousin, before they settle down for the night again. In a graveyard. Hero is too uncomfortable to sleep, so RGB lets her use his head to watch cartoons. Overeager, she doesn't let him finish his explanations and warnings about this function before turning the channel, knocking him unconscious. She watches TV and eventually falls asleep in his lap, putting his arms around her body first like he's holding her.

In the morning, it turns out that RGB is very negatively affected by human dreams, and had a bad time the night before. The two argue over Hero's lack of caution, as well as how to deal with an Idea that attacks them. Hero goes along with RGB despite the continued advice of the mystery butterfly, but is deeply dispirited by RGB's lack of concern for the wounded Idea, and eventually asks that he take her back home.

RGB refuses, and the two get into a fight, culminating with the revelation that Hero can't remember her own name anymore - her identity has been overwritten with that of "the hero". Overcome and furious at RGB, she screams at him to leave her alone, and he does.

By the time RGB has a change of heart and returns to save her, Hero is already unconscious and covered in Doubts.

When she wakes up, she sees RGB in some kind of terrifying black-and-white staticky state, absolutely just slaughtering some Fears. Scared, she tries not to attract attention, but after destroying everything else in the area, he turns and starts to reach for her before glitching back to normal and promptly passing out. This is a rather traumatizing experience for Hero and leaves her a little afraid of RGB, but she still quickly identifies the nearest source of shelter - a big tree - and drags his body there along with her.

Beneath the tree, she starts to cry again, and a little sock-like creature emerges to try and comfort her. They can only repeat sounds that they've - Hero observes that they're a sock, they parrot it back, and she decides their name is Assok. When RGB starts waking up, she climbs the tree to hide; though she tries to get Assok to come too, he stays and ends up acting as their go-between. They continue arguing, but the tension ends up defused by Assok's funny antics, until Hero falls out of the tree, impaling herself on a branch. It goes through the schism the Fear left, which had reopened during the fight, so she's unharmed, but RGB is clearly shaken by her apparent death. He starts being a bit kinder to her, giving her his jacket, and they settle down in the tree for the night. Despite hearing that RGB doesn't remember the murder incident, Hero is too afraid to speak about it.

In the morning, the tree has started to ascend into the heavens, healed by Hero's dreams and Assok's ongoing efforts. The group escapes before it bursts into flames, and find the clumps of the parasitic Nothing left behind. Nothing is a substance that censors reality; though it's dangerous, RGB has Hero collect a ball of it for trading purposes later. Hero attaches one end of the ball to RGB's ankle, which shocks him, intending to use it to blackmail him into taking her home.

They're then attacked by two more monsters, Julienne and Melody, who are angry at RGB for what we assume are very good reasons. Julienne briefly tries to kill Hero as well, to spare her a worse fate from RGB's actions, but Hero defuses the situation by complimenting her, and then Assok stops everything by being super fucking loud. RGB explains the situation, including how he knows he can't take Hero home because he's already tried, and in the end they all decide to go to the nearby Market together. On the way, Hero removes the Nothing from RGB again, having heard how dangerous it is from the others and not wanting him to actually be hurt. Also Julienne and Melody vanish! Totally fine!

The passage to the market is utterly dark, which frightens Hero. RGB offers to hold her hand through, but she confesses that she doesn't trust him. However, she follows up by adding that she trusts Madras, Julienne, Melody, Assok, and all the other people they've met; since none of them told her she shouldn't be with RGB, she asks him not to let down their trust. They each agree to hold one end of his cane and enter the passage.

Hero's still afraid as they enter, but RGB helps calm her by teaching her how to listen to what's around her, and then by telling her a story on the way. The market is bustling and incredibly exciting for Hero, but RGB sees an enemy of his, Click, in the crowd, and the two repair quickly to the shop of his friend Cell. On the way, they witness a character losing all their inspiration and dissipating; again, RGB comforts Hero, offering her a handkerchief when she cries and doing a magic trick to cheer her up.

At Cell's shop, RGB trades the Nothing for some new clothes for Hero, called amour. It protects her due to being infused with the love of a former owner, though she wanted armor. She also fixes RGB's sleeves for him, because apparently his shirt has always been too big and he never figured out how to do anything with them. It's adorable.

When Assok expresses fear and frustration over being so small, she decides to trade one finger from each hand to get them some kind of assistive device. They have to remain behind to wait for it to be done, though, so Hero leaves alone with RGB again.

On their way out of the market, Hero and RGB become separated. Yelling each other's name, they reunite, but they also encounter Click. He holds RGB at gunpoint, but he puts on a cute show to make Hero laugh, with puns and singing, which distracts Click long enough to effect an escape.

Click gives chase and shoots at them, causing an explosion which knocks some bystanders into the ocean surrounding the Market. Hero tries to run to their aid but is held back by RGB; though she's a hero, there's nothing she can do to help.

At that point, Click arrives and shoots RGB. Hero tries to attack him in RGB's defense, leading him to question why she would defend him at all after everything he's done. She won't agree that RGB is evil, but also can't call him good - drawing on something he told her earlier that day, she ends up deciding that he's neutral.

The guardians of the Market arrive to punish Click for his destruction, but he asks to first have his justice against RGB, who murdered "him" - and Hero as well. She remembers how he explained that her former identity was gone, and her schism cracks open again. The guardians declare that RGB should be punished, but that Click has forfeited his right to justice by causing harm himself, so Hero, as the most recent victim, should decide his fate. When RGB protests, Click takes charge. He mutes RGB, gives Hero his gun, and asks her a simple question: what do heroes do to monsters?

Hero, despite her shock and betrayal, has an answer: they save them. She throws the gun into the ocean and defies Click to do something about it.

Click attacks her, but RGB leaps to her defense, even trying to shield her with his body until the other denizens of the Market force Click into the ocean.

The Market guardians accept Hero's verdict and allow her and RGB to leave freely, but banish RGB from returning and ask that Hero act as RGB's guardian, a charge which she accepts. (It is probably relevant to note that the guardians do not seem to understand the concept of a child.)

The pair leaves and walks in silence until it gets dark again, which is when Hero decides to ask RGB about his previous heroes. He confirms that most of the people they've met were once heroes. He also explains his motivations somewhat - he wants to save this world because all others depend on it. It's the source of stories, and all people and other worlds are made up of stories. Hero then has an epiphany: that the world they're in is the World of Make Believe. She and RGB share their excitement over the realization.

On the way out, they encounter some crystallized dreams. Hero touches one, which ends up being a nightmare, and RGB pulls it off her. When she clings to him for comfort, he actually holds her and doesn't shake her off for once. Eventually, after she feels better, they make their way out of the dark.

Personality: One of the cornerstones of Hero's status as hero is her courage. Though she's very young, she's not a child to be frightened easily, even all on her own surrounded by strange things and people. She's also very kind, both of which mean that she's quick to charge into danger to help others. Part of this is fueled by the fact that she is supposed to be a hero now, but she also got into this entire thing by agreeing immediately to help RGB.

Mercy's a big part of her. She's deeply upset when she harms a creature who was literally just attempting to eat her and RGB, and feels betrayed when RGB shows zero concern for its welfare. Later, despite the many, many things RGB has done wrong both in general and to her specifically, she takes a very active stance in saving him and agrees to take care of him in the future. She'll try to help basically anything in distress, and will go to great lengths for people she considers friends, even trading away parts of her own body on their behalf.

There's a lot of people she calls friend, too. Even in entirely foreign environments, Hero's very open and quick to trust other people as soon as they're kind to her. She makes friends easily. She will revoke that trust if she decides someone's being shady (like RGB the king of bullshit), but otherwise she'll consider a nice person totally trustworthy and good despite having only met them like once. Even with RGB, she moves past a lot of his shit surprisingly quickly. It's obvious that, despite everything, she still does consider him a friend.

Hero's pretty perceptive. Even early in their acquaintance, she proves good at reading RGB's emotions, which is impressive considering he doesn't have a face. She doesn't always consciously observe these things - she admits that she had picked up on the the hints about RGB's past heroes very early on and just didn't want to acknowledge what she already knew. She also picks up on the rules of Make Believe instinctively. Much of this is due to her lateral problem-solving skills. This is a strength of hers; she often cuts straight through problems that RGB can't solve, just by being creative and approaching from a different angle. She's obviously a bright and inquisitive kid.

All that said, Hero is still a young child. She has trouble expressing herself when she's highly emotional; she might shut down, or just be unable to really verbalize what she's thinking. She also sulks and throws tantrums sometimes; all things considered she has pretty good reasons most of the time, it's just not super productive. Personal space and boundaries aren't much of a consideration, either. She can be physically affectionate, and the idea that other people might not want to engage in that doesn't seem to have crossed her path.

Abilities:
Schism: This isn't really an ability, but it's notably weird: the schism in her chest she received when she was run through by a Fear tends to tear back open in times of great emotional pain. This can be beneficial - anything trying to stab her through the chest then just goes through the existing hole - but it's probably not healthy in the long run. The schism's true nature isn't really clear, but it can be closed again through exposure to dreams, and every indication is that it should be closed as soon as possible.

Amour: Hero's clothes are amour - hand-me-downs that are infused with the emotions of previous owners. They help protect her against damage, I guess? I don't know, maybe they're magic!

Inventory: Just her clothes! Plus her green boots, because I'm not just gonna leave them in RGB's weird void forever, they're important

Q&A:
Are all lives equal, or are some lives more important than others? Like, lives of monsters or people or stuff like that? I think they're all equal.
Do you consider yourself to be special in any way? If so, how? ...I'm supposed to be the Hero, and I know that's important. But I don't know. There's been a lot of heroes. And I didn't know it was going to be like this.
Can you forgive a major transgression if the one who did it is sorry? Yeah! If they're really sorry.
Describe a fond memory you have. Oh! After I met Assok, RGB started being nicer. We had fun, and got to sleep in a tree, and then the tree flew, and we had to swing down from it before it caught on fire! It was so much fun!
What’s your opinion on your circle of friends? I like my friends! Most of them aren't around a lot, though. Usually it's just me and RGB. He's...he's my friend. [.....] Yeah, he is.
If someone you admired asked you to do something you didn’t agree with, would you do it? RGB tells me to do things I don't want to sometimes, and I guess I did those. But it wasn't really because of that. It's just 'cause he knows what's happening most of the time. I don't know why he won't let me help people more, though. He's the one who wanted me to be a hero.

...I'm supposed to be in charge of him now. Maybe I can just do what I want next time.
What is the hardest thing you’ve ever done? [......] I don't know.
